What is your greatest accomplishment?

Post  Lou Lou on Wed Jul 01, 2009 7:13 pm

What is your greatest accomplishment??????? and don't say your child/children!

OK.
My greatest accomplishment would have to be actually getting a degree in art.
I never thought that I was good enough to be considered "artistic" so to receive a degree in that very area was really special to me.
I remember before graduation we had to do an art exhibit of our pieces and I thought I would have nothing to show but I actually had several great pieces and I had people want to BUY my art!!!!

OK..... who is going to go next?!!!!!!! Smile/happy

Lou Lou, that's awesome hun!!! I come from an artsy family, I loved painting pictures in highschool.

I'm not sure, I'd say my biggest accomplishments are getting a college degree and finding a job in my field 2 years later as a draftsperson, buying my first car and buying my house. Growing up we lived in rented apartments, my mom stayed home and we lived on welfare for the 18 years I lived there (my dad not being in the picture either) and she didn't own a car except for maybe a year of the 18 years I lived there, she owned 2 beat up cars that died pretty fast. So for my future I wanted better then how I was raised and that's what I'd have to say my biggest accomplishments are.

Sorry I couldnt' just pick one, but it is all in one accomplishment to me because it's everything I wanted done in a matter of a 4 year time frame.

My biggest accomplishment would be finally obtaining my bachelor's IT degree, although I haven't found a job in the field yet. Also, purchasing my first home was a big accomplishment. I still have some more goals that I have set for myself that can supersede my current accomplishments. I want to own a much bigger home. I just re-enrolled at University of Phoenix online to get my masters in information systems. I also want to be able to buy my girls a car for their 16th birthday(nothing awesome, but still cute).

What an awesome thread!

I don't have much to say as far as education. I am proud of you all for succeeding in getting your degrees. I would love to get a degree in psychology one day.

As for my greatest accomplishment. I don't really know what to say, besides, "my family." I haven't been to university yet.

I think my greatest accomplishment so far is my music, and what it has brought me and those around me. I love music and hope to do more with it in the future Smile/happy My "Lullaby For No One" song has touched a lot of people, and I never knew or expected it to when I wrote it after my miscarriage. So if I can continue to help and inspire others through my music, I will feel fulfilled.

Re: What is your greatest accomplishment?

It's kinda old, but in 1992 I was awarded an "Academic Honors in Writing" distinction on my college transcript. To be considered, you had to submit a portfolio of papers through your department to be judged. I was a History and English major and chose the English dept, meaning I already had some competition! I made that cut. We then had a timed impromptu essay on a given topic. I made that cut too. At commencement about a dozen of us stood up and were recognized in front of the entire graduating class for our accomplishment. That was pretty cool.

Another sorta noteable things...I learned how to ride a dirt bike at 32, nearly 33. I'm not naturally talented, lol.

In 2006 I got my health/life insurance license and Series 6 securities license. The securities (investment sales) is the harder exam to pass. In 2007 I got my Series 65 securities license, giving me more licenses than most of the other agents in my workplace....and I'm "only" an assistant to another agent, lol.

oh I almost forgot, I graduated 2nd in my high school class (3.98/4.0), was awarded a 75% tuition paid academic scholarship, and was admited to the Honors College at my university. That's so long ago though....doesn't mean much anymore.

Beth,
Yes it does. It means a lot. Wow, you are super smart. Not many people can claim that distinction. Go girl!!!!

Tiff,
Your musical talent is awesome. I can sing a lick, let alone play an instrument(although I can play a mean "Mary Had a Little Lamb" on a recorder Smile/happy ). I tip my hat to people with great voices. It's something that I always wished I could do. My poor darling Jadah thinks both she and I can sing, and I just don't have the heart to tell her otherwise yet.(but you better bet she will not be in any singing competitions!!)

Well, I hope you don't mind me sharing this. I only realised recently that I have accomplished it but I have and it makes me so happy. The pain and memories haven't gone but I can finally have sex with dh without having flashbacks to when I was sexually assaulted (OK, raped, but I hate that word!). It's not academic and doesn't involve a talent but it was the one thing in my life I thought I never would achieve and I'm sure that I can put it behind me now. I think having Molly has helped as it has forced me to focus on other things, whereas before a big portion of my life revolved around that subject. I hope I can just move forward and maybe support others in the future.

Well, I knew we would have great responses to this questions because this is one of the most talented and intelligent groups of women I've had the honor to be a part of!

Beth - I worked in insurance for years and the tests you've had to pass are SO difficult! I think that says a lot about you. I also must say, I envy the fact that you learned to do something like dirt bike riding!!!! I don't know if I could do that! I think it's really cool!

Tiff - I would have to agree with you that your singing/writing abilities are very impressive. I'll be able to say one day, " I knew her when....." !!!!!!

Emma - Thank you for sharing your greatest accomplishment with us. I am sorry you had to experience that but I'm so glad you are able to be with your husband and enjoy being with him!!!!!!! That is something you should be very proud of!

Gutter - you have come a long way and I think you really enjoy what you are doing too and that is sooo important!!!!!
You are very talented - we've all seen that in your fabulous new kitchen! Your DF may have been the handyman but we all know you came up with that design! : )

Cherry -I think it's great that you are continuing your studies!!! I think you left out the fact that you are a fantastic writer! If you have any more stories you should share them with us!!!!!! : )

Re: What is your greatest accomplishment?

Post  sapphire on Mon Jul 06, 2009 12:10 pm

Wow this is a hard question, I really had to give it some thought! But before I tell you my answer ...

Tiff, I agree, you are so talented. I don't know if I ever told you, and i'm so sorry if I didn't, but soon after my miscarriage Ginny sent me a link to your song on youtube (with a warning not to watch it at work!) and it so powerful. You totally expressed the grief I was feeling and that in itself was comforting. I am seriously tearing up now just remembering your song and how I felt when I first saw you sing it so soon after my loss. You are incredibly talented and that song in particular is such a gift to anyone who's lost a baby.

Emma, we may have spoken about this before but we have a little in common and was actually thinking about mentioning it here in answer to the question before I even read your post. My story is a little different, I wasn't assaulted but I was sexually abused by someone who was a leader in my old church for about a month when I was in high school.

When I was in my third year of university, the sexual abuse that I never dealt with came up in a really powerful way, and I was a mess trying to cope - daily flashbacks, anxiety attacks, fear of men and church leadership, crying all the time, etc. I was dating my DH at the time and would tense up and freeze if he touched me, but he was so good and patient. Anyway - that year of university was one of the hardest of my life, but I used the support I had in DH and got counselling, and leaned on a few close friends who knew what was happening. I continued with school full-time and at the end of the year I received an award for having the highest GPA in my university (it is a small school - 150 students at the time!). The night before the ceremony, DH told me that he saw this award like a purple cross for me, and explained that a purple cross is given to soldiers who are seriously wounded but survive. It still is a very meaningful memory for me.

So I am proud of my degree and the work I've done to help others, but I think if I am honest, I am most proud of walking through all that and finding healing on the other side, in every way. I still have strong faith in God and I've even been able to trust people in my current church and be involved there. And I am proud of my DH for being so amazing and choosing to stay by my side through so much when we had only just started dating, and I am proud of the relationship we have today that is so strong because of that. We've known all along that if we could make it through that so early on in our relationship, we can face anything that comes our way.
