Post  Lily*Blossom Fri Sep 18, 2009 3:43 pm

Okay, so I've been trying to find a house to rent, since our lease at our crappy apartment is up in November. I have had two separate scam artists try the same thing on me.

What they do, is they steal the address, house information, and interior and exterior photos of a home that is legitimately FOR SALE, off a realtor's website. Then the scam artists make a fake ad on craigslist claiming that they are the landlords or owners of the house, and tell you that you can drive by the exterior to view the home, but that because they are out of the country, nobody is available to show you the interior of the house.

I am going to show you an email conversation between me and this scam artist. I cannot decide whether I should write back or not, let me know what you think. My responses will be in green, the scam artists in black.

Me: You have two different prices listed for this house. In the ad title you say $760.00 per month. In the actual ad you list it as $950.00 per month. Just wondering what is the actual price?

Our range is no more than $875.00 per month. The house seems nice, so we would be interested in finding out more if the price is right.

Thank you,
Tiffany

Scam artist:
Thanks for the inquiry about my place, and sorry for the late response.

OWNER'S INFORMATION

Land Lords name: Liz Savidakis
Present Location: West Africa.
Mission in Africa: Business.

HOUSE INFORMATION

My house is up for: $760
The deposit is: $350
My house will be available for like 3 to 4 years
Here Is my House Address: 6610 E UNIVERSITY DR #111, Mesa, AZ

So if you are really interested in my house for rent I will want you to go and view the exterior part of the house first and get back to me so that I can forward the RENTAL APPLICATION FORM to you.

I await your response.

Me: I did some more research. This house is for sale, not for rent. You are a scam artist, please do not contact me again. This is the second scam response I've gotten about a house. You think I'm just going to go view the exterior and then mail you the money? DO NOT CONTACT ME AGAIN. I have reported you to the authorities.

Scam artist:
How do you mean?

Me:
They had a program on the t.v. about people like you. You go to websites where people are selling their homes and you steal the pictures, address, and information and try to pass it off as a rental. Then you tell people to look at the exterior and mail you an application. Then you steal their identity or their money and they never see a key to the home, and the home was never yours to begin with. You say you are over seas. You are telling me that if you own a home in the area you don't have a friend who can show a potential renter the interior of the house? Seriously how stupid do you think I am?

Why don't you get a life and do something good in the world instead of trying to steal from other people? Drugs, crime, violence are terrible in this world, and you could be making the world a better place, but instead you think you can just steal from somebody.

I found out about your scam because I actually called the company who is selling the home, and they have never heard of Liz Savidakis.

Do me a favor and re think your life. Do something good with it instead of stealing, lying, and cheating. My husband and I, we don't have much, but we are honest hard working people and we EARN our money, we don't steal it like you are trying to do.

This is how I know you are a scam artist: http://www.fraudguides.com/tips/august5.asp

This is how I reported you to the authorities: http://www.ftc.gov/

Do not bother contacting me again, I will not respond to you.

F**k you

Your responses are awesome!! I am so proud that you wrote back and told them they you reported them and are not going to let them continue to get away with this. They know they are going to be caught and that is why they responded with F You. I wouldn't bother writing them back. Good for you for looking into it and finding out the truth of the matter!! A lot of people would have fallen for it.

Ya, I'm not going to write back. I was just totally mad earlier when I opened my email to find the words F**K You.

What right do they have to be mad at me when they are the ones adding to the pain and dishonesty in this world?

I really hope they do get caught, but they probably won't.

Way to go, Tiff! That's so annoying with those scam artists. Good responses on your part, which makes them mad cause their scam didn't work. Yeah, I probably wouldn't have written back either. But I would have been soooo mad, too.

We had something similar happen when looking for houses a year ago. We found scam ads that just advertised houses that didn't exist. We used google maps street view to look at the houses from our computer and to see what type of neighborhoods they were in and there were totally different houses, cross streets didn't exist, hardly any details in the ads etc. So totally a scam, and I am not sure what they responded when people responded to the ads.

OMG! Good for you at calling him/her out on the scam. I really didn't know such things existed (although I'm not surprised). I last looked for a place to live in 1995 when Craigslist didn't exist!

Your responses made me laugh, Tiff. You really got them. I hope they get caught. You did well. I have never encountered this, but you've taught me something to look for if I'm ever looking for a place in the future. Wow, for them saying that to you at the end. Again, I hope they get caught and go to jail!!

Way to go Tiff!!!

I've been trying to sell my washer and dryer. I haven't even replied, but here's a scam that I think I just got recently...

Please note that when he asks for Address, it says city, state and zip, I have these items listed in Canada, which is Province and Postal Codes, NOT State and Zip, LMAO!!! It also says he's in Ontario, so he's got to know...

Hello,
I would love to buy your Moffat Heavy Duty Washer & Dryer - $200
which you have for sale,i came across your ad for my first time using
craig's list(I guess i was lucky LOL!).I wish i could come down to you
to look at it but unfortunately i am currently in Ontario but i can do
the whole transaction from here with ease. Please advice if the item is
still in good conditions and if you can accept a Money Order for
payment.
The price of the item is fair to me and i wouldn't want to loose it
so it would be my pleasure to add another $50 to the asking price so
you can sell the item to me and also tell other interested parties
that it has been sold to avoid competitions(LOL).
I have read the craig's list warning and i understand they warn
against cashier's check, but i want you to know that i am a good guy
and would never do anything to harm anyone. So if you are okay with my
offer, kindly get back with the information below so i will use it to
make payment to you immediately,
1)Full Name
2)Full Address(City,State and zip code)
3)Phone Number(Best time you can be reached on Phone)
Please don't bother yourself about the pick up,the pick up will
be handled by me.I will have my forwarding courier to proceed with the
pick up once you notify me that you've got your payment and cash in
hand.
I will be waiting to read a reply from you soonest.Stay Blessed
and Best Regards.

Wow, Gutter,
Yeah, warning bells would be going off for me too. You must really be selling your item dirt cheap, for him to not only pay an extra $50 , but to also pay to have it delivered to himself. Yeah right. He is definitely trying to scam. You should tell him you only accept Postal money orders(do they have those in Canada?). He can't fake that.

Yeah, definitely a scam. Someone in the US might make that mistake about zip codes vs. postal codes and states vs provinces, but a Canadian never would!

Scam Scam Scam. Never do money orders!! Scam artists always offer to send you more than they should and then you get the money orders and they are fakes!! It happened to my Aunt, luckily they didn't ship what they were going to be selling!!!

I know. That's why I said a postal money order. There's a seal on it. When I lived in San Diego, one of my landlords would not accept checks or money orders, unless it was a bank or postal money order.

Unfortunately even one of our local credit unions had some counterfeit money orders out there. And I've heard of counterfeit travelers checks too. We used to take about half of our vacation funds in American Express travelers checks but we started having such a hard time cashing them that we just take all cash now. Stupid scam artists.

I didn't know postal money orders had a special seal on them, Mscherry. I totally missed your previous post, but that is good to know, and if we ever sell anything in the future, I will require a postal money order from the buyer, for sure.

I have something else to add. I had to change my cell phone number because in one my first inquiries to a phony craigslist ad I put my phone number and I got 7 calls starting at 4 a.m. this morning from a weird India number. They hung up on me without ever saying anything when I picked up every time except this last time, when the guy asked for me by my first name only. He told me that the "auto loan" I applied for had been approved but they just needed a few more bits of information from me before they could proceed. When I told him that I never applied for an auto loan and to please put me on the do not call list and not contact me again, he raised his voice to me in frustration and told me to listen to what he had to say that I DID apply for an auto loan. When I informed him that I am not stupid and that I see he is calling from India because I googled the phone number online and saw that it is a scam he is running and also that I have a car that is less than a year old and would NEVER apply for an auto loan he hung up on me.

After that I got freaked out, and I knew they would keep harassing me, so I called my cell phone provider and told them what happened. They deemed it as harassment and changed my number at no cost to me. I was really grateful. I'm annoyed that I had to go as far as change the number because of this, but still, I'm glad that I don't have to get those types of phone calls again.

Also whoever had this phone number last subscribed to all kinds of horoscope text message crap and I get them randomly at times. So I am actually kind of glad to get the new number.

Now we are just going to watch and make sure my identity doesn't get stolen or something. There aren't many people in the world with my last name, so it would be easy to narrow down my information if the scam artists really wanted to.

So creepy! People can be so evil, there's a lot of scams where you've apparently won a prize, but have to pay a small fee...ridic!

Tell you what annoys me, this is no where near the same scale lol, but we get people in subway buying something small like a cookie and paying with a £20 note. Then, when you give them the change, they ask for the note back and offer to give you the money in change again. So you do, and then they say they haven't had their note! I've had it done to me, but there were no twenties in the till! I was firm hehe. I was like "There is CCTV you know". And he was like "oh yeah, silly me, I put it in my back pocket".

Toffee I have had someone do that to me before when I was cashiering at the restaurant where I used to work. My boss called it a "change game" and he wasn't upset or anything, he said it can happen to the best of us. It's good that your drawer was empty, you totally saw that the person was trying to rip you off.
