I have a singer. They're continuously coming out with later models, so my model is not available anymore, but they're cheap. I don't sew enough to rate a singer versus any other sewing machine.

My mom has always had Singers. She supposed to be giving me her old one that still works perfectly. It's probably older than I am! Her "new" one has to be over 20 years old. They last!

Yes, Singer is the way to go. My grandma and my mom both have Singers. Actually, my grandma sewed my wedding dress on her Singer. They are great and seem to last forever. Smile/happy

I have the least expensive singer on the market and it works well for what I use it for. It's pretty easy to use too.
Good luck!

Yep same here I have a Singer, it's not a brand new model probably about 6 years old now but it's fantastic and so smooth Smile/happy I bought an overlocker too which gives everything I make a real professional finish you can pick them up fairly inexpensive these days.

Newer singers are all made overseas and the quality has gone downhill - Don't expect your children to inherit yours the way you may have inherited your mothers (or grandmother's!)

I've inherited 2 table Singer machines, a regular Singer, and a Singer computerized machine. All over 20 years old.. Newer machines have a life expectancy of about 5 years.

I have a serger as well, back at my dad's. Inherited from my mother, still in the box, never used. Plan to bring it up on my next visit there. My home use machine is a Pfaff and I love it. I started off on a basic Brother $99 machine, which was donated to my aunt.

Galaxy, did you ever get a sewing machine?

I finally got my mom's old Singer. It's gotta be at least 35 years old. The only reason she ever quit using it is because she won a new one at a fabric store opening (at least 20 years ago!) and the "new" one had a button holer attachment.

Anyway, my first project will be to take the cuffs off of hubby's new long underwear and attempt to shorten both legs and arms and reattach cuffs. I don't know why I'm so intimidated by sewing machines! I guess it's because my mom was really good at sewing. After that, I have some motocross pants of mine (non-cuffed) that need shortening. The ones in my avatar pic, in fact.
