So... Dad? Daddy? Papa? Hey Yo? What's your naming history? Empty So... Dad? Daddy? Papa? Hey Yo? What's your naming history?

Post  Tonglen guy Fri Oct 10, 2008 4:33 pm

Somewhere along the line I started being called "Daddy" by my wife and my kids. I just realized it one day and couldn't remember when it began. I love it. But it got me thinking.

I'm "Dad" if my girls want something or are exasperated. When I was a kid, my father was "Dad" but almost never "Daddy." To my oldest sister (there are five of us) he was always "Daddy" and almost never "Dad."

My Irish maternal grandfather was always called "Papa," excepting that I always called him "Grampa."

How are these "ID" names arrived at in your families? Tradition? Derivatives of early childhood words?

There's a story about an old man who had two large hound dogs. Their names were "Get off the rug" and "You too." I don't know if that story has a point, but it's a good story anyway.

lol,i Like daddy but personally could not call my husband 'daddy' not sure why it just feels a bit weird. My son calls My husband daddy although at some point he'll have to be told he is not the biological father. When we do I do hope it won't damage him psychologically.

Anyway,I am from the Uk and called my dad "daddy, later on and now 'dad'.I call my stepfather by his first name although when I talk about him to othrs I sometimes refer to him as dad (he came along when i was 8).

I was at the park with my son in recent months and over heard some kids calling their dad "father" I have never heard someone do that ...in this centuay anyway.I thought it was hilarious.I don't know why,it just sounded funny to me!

I've always called my father"dad". However when speaking about him, he's my father, not my dad. Dunno why. Sounds more formal I guess. My mother's always been Mom and formally mother.

I jokingly called my fiance "dad" when he was leaving for work about a week before we found out I was pregnant. We joke back and forth like that a bit now, calling him "dad" and me "mom". Mostly cause we're both so happy about it, and it hasn't quite sunk in yet.

My dad is Dad, when I talk to him. I used to call him Daddy up until I got married, then it felt weird.

My husband prefers to be called Daddy by his son (my step-son) and he refers to himself as Daddy when talking to our daughter. When I am talking to my husband for my daughter (who's 6 months and only says ma ma ha ha!!!) I will call my husband Daddy for instance I'll say" Lily Mae, ask Daddy if he'll change your diaper."

When it's just me and the hubby talking though, I don't call him Daddy Smile/happy

When my husband dies, all he wants on his grave stone is "DADDY"

YAY! Our first father member !!! Welcome again Tonglen Guy.

DF is "daddy" to Jayden although all she can say for him is "da da". I call him Daddy sometimes around the girls, but it just comes out normal.

My dad is Daddy to all of his kids and we're pretty much all grown(28(me), 21, and 19, he has another son by his current wife and a step son, but I would imagine they call him daddy too, but IDK.

My daughter calls her biological father, daddy. And she call DF, BJ(navy nickname b/c last name comes first) for Jarelle Benjamin.

But, it gets kind of weird for my grandfathers.

maternal grandfather - "Pa Pa BJ"
paternal grandfather - "Grandpa Whitney"

It's got to be the background thing.

Well, my nephew calls his father's parents Gran Dad and Nana.
My parents are his Papa and Nana.....
The two Nana's really confuse him so he calls my mom "Papa's Nana"!!!!
It's so cute!
When my mom calls to talk to him my sister will say, "do you want to talk to Nana?" and he always says "Papa's Nana?" and if she says "yes" he jumps at the opportunity to talk to her! Isn't that funny?

My grandfather was "Grandpa" to everyone but my father, who called him "Pa." My father was always "Dad." My kids called me Dad.

Fast forward to age 45. My second wife's adult daughters had to decide what to call me, and it wasn't going to be Dad for a couple of reasons. The main one was that they had their own father and I was merely their mother's husband. But their kids immediately started calling me Grandpa, and gradually, so did the girls. Wierd, huh? Their mother is Mom, but mother's husband is Grandpa? Shrug. It works, I guess.
