Re: Sippy Cups
I've just about decided that the key is to have the cup out ALL the time and offer it several times a day. (I'm sure it helps that they are all older now!) Owen has started drinking an entire cup of very diluted juice or just plain water everyday from his sippy cup. He was also take a *little* milk from one.
How much water/juice should they be having? I don't want to fill him up on water when he should be drinking milk!
How are you guys handling that?

Re: Sippy Cups
Yes, good idea, Lou Lou. I will try and have a sippy cup available for him all day now, maybe that helps, too.
I won't be of any help with the quantity of water they should drink. I still nurse Kian with every meal and then in between for snack (basically on demand). So he doesn't really drink a lot of liquids at all out of a sippy cup (just with summer coming I wanted him to be able to drink additional water on hot days).

Re: Sippy Cups
Hey Lou Lou, I don't have any problems with thane drinking TOO much milk, so he gets about 8 oz total of milk a day and then the motts for totts juice and of course, my milk on demand. If he isn't getting too much milk, then there's nothing wrong with keeping on giving it to him all day, but if he weighs more than he should really then I'd say more water would be fine to substitute Thane hates water though, so he never gets it...

Re: Sippy Cups
Haha!! I KNOW Lou Lou!! AND that was like 2 months ago almost!!! He is a big boy, but still a big baby too! He is his mommy's boy! he is even saying "mommy" and "Daddy" now So sweet!!!! He also calls my mom "me-ma" which she hates! she said it makes her sound like a TN hick Her name is really Grandma
But, yes he is a big boy all of the sudden huh!? This morning when he woke up we said "You wanna go to church and play with your friend Abe?" and he started laughing and nodding his head yes! It only took 16 months but we have finally mastered the word YES!

Re: Sippy Cups
Jayden hates water too, and I have to remember to try cause I don't drink much water either. But, the doctor said that she should be drinking 16oz of milk a day(as if) try tripling that on a good day. He never gave me a set quantity for water though. But, I would say 8oz is sufficient(we don't even get 1oz down her on a regular basis). But, now she's learned the word "juice". Lucky for us, she considers her milk juice too. If anyone knows how much water they should be drinking let me know, cause I know we need to give her more water.

Re: Sippy Cups
P.S. according to the article babies should get about 33.5 ounces of water per day. LM gets so much less than that. She mostly drinks milk. I offer her water constantly, but she isn't into it!

Re: Sippy Cups
Thanks for posting this article, Tiff. Very interesting! Wow, that sounds like a lot of water. Kian is definitely not getting enough water and with me nursing him still I do not know exactly how much he is drinking each day.
But, we made some progress using a sippy cup - so I am excited about that. The last few days he has been drinking from one - not nearly enough, but it's getting better.

Re: Sippy Cups
Hey Ginny, thanks for the reassurance. Yes, that's what I've been doing checking his diapers. And yes, looking forward to when he can better tell me what he wants - it's a bit of a guessing game right now.

Re: Sippy Cups
amen to that! itsonly the past week he can finally nod his BIG head yes toddlers have big heads so its hard to move it to nod bless him! but he is doing great, and now he can say 'boo' and go for it and sometimes i'm like 'no, go get sippy cup' and he'll go find it and drink but if its a NO WAY, GOTTA HAVE BOO, then sorry, gotta have boo
It is getting much easier to understand what he wants and he even says "Thank You!" (ta - too) so i will give him something

Re: Sippy Cups
That sounds so cute. It really made me smile reading your post - I can just imagine seeing you two discuss back and forth discussing what he wants. And if it has to be 'boo', then it has to be 'boo', darnit. Same here, lol. Kian thinks the same way. So adorable - your post really made me laugh!

Re: Sippy Cups
Now I've read some where else that they need a total of 33.5 ounces of FLUIDS per day. At least 8 ounces of those fluids should be water.
So many different opinions.

Re: Sippy Cups
Your updated post sounds more reasonable for me. I just don't see myself giving her two 8oz cups of milk(min amount per doctor) and 4-8oz cups of water. But, starting today, I WILL make sure she drinks at least one full cup of water per day. Thanks again, Tiff.

Re: Sippy Cups
Wow! that is something to think about. Owen still drinks 18 oz of milk and probably just 4 oz of very diluted juice a day. If we are outside or in the car he will drink and entire sippy cup but I think it's just because he is bored.
I've also noticed that when he drinks a lot of juice/water it interferes with his milk consumption.

Re: Sippy Cups
Lucy still gets 24 oz of formula a day. And she drinks a cup or two of water. I try to encourage it because it is so hot here, easy for a baby to get dehydrated. We turned her car seat around a little early (shh don't tell--she weighs enough, just a couple weeks shy of old enough) because it was blocking the air vents to the back seat and in 100+ degrees I was worried she was getting overheated driving around, her little face would be all flushed. She thinks she is the queen of sheba facing forward lol.
I bought a new little cup I really like, I think it is smiliar to the nuby. It is by Munchkin. I think I got it at walmart or target. She seems to like drinking out of it, and I like knot having to mess around with those valve things (especially when it comes to cleaning them!). We were in the restaurant and it was hanging upside down by this tether strap we got and it did not even drip once. ( the tether strap is a great thing-- I got it at Walgreens).

Re: Sippy Cups
Wow, DM, that tether thing seems like a great idea. I must go and look for that before we travel this summer. We will be flying overseas and I don't like to constantly have to pick up his sippy from the floor of the plane or from the sidewalk when he is in his stroller. Great idea!

Re: Sippy Cups
The tether strap is at WALGREENS. I got the cup at that other w place. It is like $6.00 for two and they are totally worth it to not have to pick things off the floor fifty million times.

Re: Sippy Cups
I got Lucy a little cup at Walgreens - a Sesame Street one, that has a straw. It only took her about 10 seconds to figure out how to use that straw!
