Sleep Question Empty Sleep Question

Post  Lou Lou Fri Feb 13, 2009 2:40 pm

Hey ladies!
Just a quick question about babies and sleep. How much is enough and how much is too much sleep?
Most of you know that Owen had major sleep trouble prior to 6 months old but since then he is a sleeping champ!!!
However, I'm concerned he may be getting too much sleep.
What do you think?

He goes to bed at 9pm every night and I let him sleep until wakes up on his own in the morning. He will wake anywhere between 9:15 and 10 am. If he is still asleep at 10 am I wake him up. About two hours later he is ready for a nap. He will sleep anywhere from 1 hour to 3 hours. I never let him sleep more than three hours and he will typically take another nap about 2 - 2 1/2 hours later. This nap will be what ever he didn't get in the first nap to give him a total of 4 to 4 1/2 hours.
Does that make sense? For example, if he sleeps and hour in the morning, he'll sleep 3 in the afternoon but if he slept 3 in the morning he usually only sleeps an hour in the afternoon.

That means he sleeps 16 to 17 hours a day! Is that too much?

How much sleep are your little ones getting?

Thanks!

Lou Lou

Lucy used to not nap at all, and now I think she is getting about the same as Owen.

Bed at 9. Up at 7. Get a bottle, go back to sleep for another hour or so.
Lunch at 11. Then a 1-2 hour nap
Bottle at 4. Then a 1-2 hour nap.
Dinner
Bottle at 8:30 then to bed.

Her naps shift a little longer and shorter same as you said. I don't think they can get too much sleep. Sle has seemed to be doing alot of growing lately too.

thanks for your response! It makes me feel better! He is soooo active when he is awake so I guess he just needs the extra rest.

Lou Lou that sounds about right. LM sleeps the same amount! I think that some babies need as much as 18 hours of sleep in a 24 hour period. I think Owen is right on track.

i actually asked kaydances Dr once if she was sleeping to much (seems like a silly complaint huh? LOL!) because she was sleeping from 6:30pm till anywheres from 6:30-10:00am!! LOL!! and she would still take a 1-2 hour nap once or twice a day (usually twice) and the Dr reassured me that some kids can function with 6 hours sleep, while other kids need 12-13! nothing wrong with her, just let her sleep when she wants to hehehe. just to let you know lol
